Print at 100% scale. In your print settings, set scale to "Custom: 100%" (not "Fit to Page" or "Default" -- those shrink the PDF and ruin the measurements). Verify the 3" ruler bar at the bottom of the sheet with a tape measure.
Place your tool flat on the white area.
Keep all 4 corner markers visible and uncovered.
Photograph from directly above. Stand back (3-4 feet away) and zoom in -- this reduces shadow size and angle distortion.
Turn flash off. Use ambient room lighting. Flash creates hard shadows that make the silhouette larger than the actual tool.
Tips:
Tool too big? Tape two sheets side by side. The tool can extend past the dashed lines -- just keep the corner markers uncovered.
Reuse the sheet: Laminate it with a matte finish (not glossy -- glare interferes with scanning). A matte-laminated sheet lasts indefinitely.
ALTERNATIVEOption 2: No Printer
Place the tool on any white surface (paper, poster board, white countertop). The app will attempt to read the tape measure for scale. If it can't, you'll enter the dimensions manually.
Place the tool on a white background. This is important for a clean silhouette.
Lay a tape measure next to the tool (optional -- helps with auto-scale).
Photograph from directly above.
After scanning, you'll verify or enter the longest dimension of the tool.
Results may vary on dark or textured backgrounds. White backgrounds give the cleanest silhouettes.
